Until
the second half of the last century, "cancer
equals death" was so pervasive a belief that
physicians usually withheld the diagnosis from the
patient and informed only the family. Families, in
turn, often hid the fact that a member had the disease,
as if it were something to be ashamed of. Today the
stigma associated with cancer has largely vanished
in the U.S. Patients receive abundant information
about their illness and are free to discuss available
treatments with doctors and others.
